What to do about immigration

Okay, for the sake of argument, let’s do what politicians are always so keen for us to do – let’s worry about immigration. It is after all very sad that so many people are wandering the world, desperately looking for a safe place they can stay.

People are moving around a lot in our times. Look at the history books: in troubled times, people move around a lot. It’s not hard to understand. If you live somewhere where it’s become impossible to grow food or earn a living, or you keep getting bombed, or your government’s trying to kill you, you want to move.

So – fact: there are a lot of people moving around. You can’t blame them, can you? Any of us would, given those kinds of problems.

Politicians tell us the numbers of people coming here are creating a problem. As I just read on Facebook, “you have to have a balance between people and finance.” So, how to solve it?

Politicians could:

  1. Try to stop people coming here.
  2. Get into an eternal, expensive competition with other countries about who takes how many refugees.
  3. Stimulate employment by hiring enough people to process immigration applications, and to build more houses and staff more services so no-one’s going short.
  4. Stop the economic problems, wars and climate disasters that are making people panic and move around a lot.

Eliminate what doesn’t work

We’ve had government after government trying to apply solutions one and two, and government after government have failed. There is no doubt about this, because each government enthusiastically puts up the charts to show us how the last government failed to solve the immigration problem.

Try option three

If you really, really believe Rachel Reeves, the latest incarnation of Thatcher, with her ‘there is no money’ claim, take a look at post-war Britain. We had all the economic problems she’s going on about now, but to a far, far greater extent and the housing crisis was off the scale, because of war-damage. You know what that government did? They created the money and the energy needed by employing people to build houses, set up the NHS, etc etc etc.

Or try option four

Where do all those problems that make people panic and move around come from?  Bad government. Governments that try to kill their people are bad governments. Governments that try to solve problems by bombing other countries are bad governments. Governments that allow the military-industrial complex to make a fortune out of environmentally destructive activities are bad governments. To solve those things, we need better governments.

But for the moment, we’re stuck with Starmer and Co, so let’s try and explain this one thing to them….

Starmer and the strangers

I suspect Starmer’s government are very frightened of brown people from other countries. Starmer’s government and the companies that fund them are deeply involved in the bombing and destruction of other people’s countries, and I think they suspect that we’ve found out about that by talking to brown people who came here from other countries.

I suspect that someone needs to explain to Keir Starmer that this is the 21st century. People talk to people from all over the world on their phones, on Skype, on Zoom. Even if they chucked out all the brown people from other countries, we’d still find out about British complicity in the destruction of other countries.

It really would be much easier if our politicians stopped contributing to the destruction that forces people to move around, it would be easier if they spent some money looking after those who do turn up here (as well as looking after our own, please!) because the sooner those people are settled in and economically active, the sooner they’ll be paying tax, making things, and generally being a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem.

One response to “What to do about immigration”

  1. Yet another cracking riposte from your incredibly productive, witty, and brilliant pen! Keir Starmer and his ilk are crumbling into a morass of a sort of desperate abdication of all remaining decency or any final smidgin of morality… which is ghastly to witness, and directly lethal to so many thousands and thousands of its victims here and elsewhere. But which we must keep on resisting being sucked into.

    Thank you and bravissima!
