From Hastings to Gaza

Through this coming half term week, there is a series of workshops, and an exhibition of poetry and art for, by and about Palestinian children. Whether you want to spend a few minutes in the quiet hall, just looking at the paintings, to sit down and make use of the art materials provided to write or draw something, or write a water-melon message to hang on the tree; whether you want to spend ten minutes just looking, or a whole day at the workshops, here is something positive you can do, in response to the terrible events in Palestine.

Children can see the works of other children from Palestine and around the world, and use the pictures to inspire their own ideas. There’s a facsimile book of the paintings and poems on sale for £10, and you can, if you wish, stop and chat to the exhibition stewards from our local PSC branch. Whatever you choose to do, ‘Moon tell me truth’ is an exercise in humanizing. No matter how you address it, or what you choose to do there, it says ‘we are human, they are human, let’s communicate’.

In the entrance to the exhibition hall is an information board about the Al Mawasi twinning campaign. Whilst our politicians, and the global arms industry, are working so hard to dehumanize the people of Palestine, to make what’s going on a big, strategic issue that only the powerful can act on we, the people of Hastings can work on human connections, on trying to make this terrible time an opportunity to make our world more human, to make our politics work for us, and for everyone.

The Al Mawasi campaign is all about making those human connections. If you can talk, via zoom or any other way, with real people, you can find out what’s going on, and what you think about it, without having to try and guess which politicians you can believe.

There is a public meeting to further discuss the twinning campaign at the Stade Hall on Wednesday at 7pm. Please go along to find out more, and if you want to, have your say.
