The government just isn’t working for us, and now our local council is about to be pulled from under our feet – well, to a great extent, the council wasn’t working for us any more, either but – what’s left for us?
A month or so back, we had a big meeting at Winding Street to pull together some ideas about what Hastings wants and needs, and how we go about standing up for the politics we want, when none of the Westminster Parties seem to be on our side.
As a result of that, there are plans a-foot for a new left party – one that can stand alone to stand up for Hastings people, or merge with a new left party that actually works, if/when one should come along.
If you think it’s strange that I’m suggesting this, when I’ve made it clear I’ve had it with party politics — well so do I! But no-one’s made me join anything so far, and it’s definitely nothing to do with any existing parties. And, if by any chance we ever get another local election, Hastings should have a Hastings candidate ready to step up, not get landed with one some national party dropped in from another planet.
A local, people-led party could put up a candidate easily enough, which is something individuals can’t do unless they have more time and money to spare than most normal people do.
Amidst breath-taking corruption and betrayal, I think the only thing that can work for everyone now is an organization that’s local, and based on what local people actually say they want and need, and one that is interested enough to actually learn about what’s going on, not just make stuff up according to a national party line — If you like the sound of that come and find out more, and let’s discuss how to reach out to all of Hastings….
Hastings New Left Party group invites you to:
Organising and Learning Day
Sunday 29th June 2.30pm-6.30pm
Isabel Blackman Centre
Winding St
Hastings
TN34 3AT
It’s an afternoon to plan our next steps and discuss some key issues for creating a new left party in Hastings.
It will open with an overview of work done so far, a discussion on the national situation and our next steps, this will be followed by two learning sessions:
This economy is killing us. How do we get an economy that works for all?
We have been told for the past 40 years that there is only one way to run the economy, that profit is god, the rich are our betters and business knows best. But of course there are other ways and this is a chance to dip our toes into different economic theories including: modern monetary theory, the Preston model, Keynesianism, doughnut economics, Marxism etc.
Community Organising
We want to build a new left party that goes beyond standing in elections and is rooted in grassroots campaigning, so we will be discussing how to build power and win real victories in workplaces and communities.
Please book your place on Eventbrite here so we know how many people to expect.
Please also feel free to share this invite and ask friends, neighbours and colleagues to sign this form if they would like to come along and get involved.
NB
Last chance saloon!
After the afternoon events, there will be a screening of a film about a certain group of people which it may soon be illegal to talk about / learn about, so do stay on for the film!
