The big row in Hastings (round two)

So, let me see if I can get this right.

Hastings Women’s Voice, who wouldn’t let the Women’s Rights Network have a stall at their last do because WRN stand up for women’s rights (Women’s Voice think people who stand up for women’s rights are anti-abortion) are standing up for Queers for Palestine because Hastings Pride, who do not welcome people who are lesbian not queer (ie, women who only fancy women) or gay not queer (ie  men who only fancy men) decided they also do not welcome anyone who stands up for Palestine (ie, anyone who is anti-genocide).

You might say this is a completely different row to last week’s Big Row, but I reckon there’s a common factor — Hastings Pride and all their little satellite groups — all those who protect their funding by claiming to be in charge of who can wave the rainbow flag.

So who’s left who’s still allowed to go to Pride? Perhaps they should change their name to Genocide Pride?

And whose side am I on? I’m on the side of women and on the side of socialism. On this topic in particular, I’m on the side of people who don’t use words like cisheteropatriarchy, people who don’t hound out anyone who thinks sex matters, I’m on the side of local gays and lesbians who are looking around in vain for single-sex groups they can go to when they want to be gay and lesbian in peace, but I’m most definitely not on the side of anyone who’s diffident about calling out genocide.

I took a look at the crowd at Hastings Pride. They appear to be practising social distancing – is that still a thing? Or do they need to sit like that to look like they can fill a field?

Where’s everyone else?

Oh, they’re at the pier…

That’s it really, but here’s a bit of background for anyone who’s confused.

This is an article by Sussex Women’s Rights Network, which Hastings Women’s Voice called out as anti-trans.

This is a blog by me in response to Hastings Women’s Voice’s response to the Supreme Court ruling on our Equality Act.

And this is what Hastings PSC had to say about this weekend’s to-do.

But in short, don’t worry — outside a few social media groups and the speakers at a couple of one-day, tourist-bait events, most people know what a woman is, most people know that sex matters and, most important of all, most people know genocide is a bad thing which, like violence against women and girls, you just can’t protest about quietly.

You can forget all the long words and confusing bits if you like, you just need to reject any attempt to shut you up or make you invisible when you’re protesting things that are obviously wrong.
