“I will thkweem and thkweem until I’m thick. I will throw myself on the floor, I will blow up the world if you don’t give me what I want.”
Anyone who’s ever cared for a two-year-old will recognize the catastrophic tantrum, the baby-turned monster who’s realized the world does not always bend to its needs. The child who’s not learned the art of “compromise and survive”.
Some people never learn. For whatever reason, they grow up still willing to lie and destroy, still intent on bending the whole world to their will.
“Narcissism,” we call it. When they’re thwarted, “narcissistic rage” is what you get — and it truly can be world-destroying, if a whole community, or a whole government is suffering from it.
When kids are “spoiled rotten” or, to be more specific, when they get a chaotic, illogical upbringing, the two-year-old’s terror-rage response to not getting their way stays with them.
What happens when a whole country does that? What happens when dysfunctional parents with a guilty conscience keep buying the sweets and telling cover-up lies, and piling on favours and protections, instead of talking honestly about what went wrong? Let’s ask the US, the UK, Germany — the countries that keep shovelling weapons and money into Israel, the countries that never admit that it was anti-Semitism in Europe, not in the Middle East, that led them to think the creation of Israel was a good idea.
Israel appears to have decided that all else has failed and the only way it can keep a grip on its dysfunctional parents is to provoke world war three by repeatedly attacking Iran.
Germany, the UK and the US just keep giving them presents and making excuses for them and begging them to behave.
Neither the furious, terrified over-grown two-year-old nor its dysfunctional parents have a clue how to sort this out.
This is where more capable neighbours and family, or failing that, social services, need to step in. Yemen was the first, I think, to try and sort it out.
But too many countries are just standing by, or making cover-up excuses. Our country is one of those.
Israel is not “just” destroying Gaza. It’s destroying itself, the whole of Palestine and, if it can manage it, will destroy the world.
Call social services!
That’s you and I. That’s everyone who’s not tied into a dysfunctional government role. Keep up those marches and direct actions, build up BDS and for goodness sake, let’s keep talking, and thinking up more things we can do because time and hope are running out, not just for Gaza but for all of us.
Maybe we can do this, but it takes all of us, and it takes some ideas we haven’t had yet. Please get thinking, get talking, get writing, and take action — More action.
