Who are we?

This is the time of monsters

Who are we, the monstrous, pitiless, violent, racist enemy you can’t understand, and can’t defeat? How did we become the despicable, cruel demons you stare at daily in horror?

How do we do it? We take our children, as they approach adulthood, and put them in a heroic cult-army where at first they have adventurous training, taking occasional, clever pot-shots at distant targets; then, once they’re used to that we take them in closer, until they get used to killing and bullying, understanding that ‘Arab’ means ‘target’.

If they get really good at it, we take them all the way, to where they can unleash their passions against a captive Arab ‘enemy’, and share pictures of their creative triumphs of cruelty on social media. Once we’re sure they’re baked good and hard, we send them back to their parents with their innocent young hearts buried in an accretion of guilt, shame and fear.

And the refuseniks? We arrest them, put them in military prisons where they’ll be treated – well, not as badly as Arabs of course, but badly enough that they cook up a rage, a fear and a desire for vengeance that, sooner than keep it cooped up forever, they will probably eventually agree to vent against the enemy – Arabs.

Who are we? Well, you’ve guessed by now. Other armies may have other enemies to demonize but we are the IOF, Netanyahu’s army, defenders of the apartheid state. Don’t you dare shrink away in horror and disbelief. Our parents look at us when we come home, hear our stories and say ‘well, it didn’t do me any harm,’ because their hearts have their own accretions, that allow them to imagine all too well how hotly the desire for revenge must be burning in Arab hearts. They need us to defend them from our victims’ vengeance.

And so we will go on and pass our children in their turn into the IOF’s hands and you know what? You do know how our government got the way they are, you must do.

Their hearts and their minds were baked hard in the ovens of European racism, sexism and classism, and it is European racism, sexism and classism that keeps and protects our government. Why do they do that? I’ll tell you why – we are the model army, the template, the developers of cruelty, fear and control.

We are what they use to protect them…

….from you

If you want to fix it, really fix it, then you need to look to your own hearts and minds, and sort out your oh-so superior European racism, sexism and classism.

Yours sincerely,

The IOF

… and the US forces and ICE, most of the European armies and a fair few of their police forces as well as all the little would-be cruelty-and-control armies that are developing in the aftermath everywhere we go but above all, the mysterious, the monstrous, the uniformed private armies of corporate security and surveillance who are more and more taking over from state forces the job of terrorizing, othering and controlling you all, to keep the billionaires, their pet politicians and their Silicon Valley surveillance pedlars safe.

Okay, as a riddle that wasn’t very hard — not for those of us who are already on the trail of the real enemy anyway — but it’ll be more difficult for some, so please share this blog, or if you don’t like this blog, share these ideas, and the links below, to spread understanding.

Giving up is not an option, not even to save your own skin – that’s not how it’s going to go. Even if you don’t think the remaining people of Palestine are worth the effort – even if you think we can come back from what we’ve seen, consider this: When they’ve finished destroying a whole country – shredding the men, women and children, even babies, when they’re done destroying the buildings, the animals, the trees and the birds, when they’ve finished poisoning the air, the soil, the water and the fish in the sea, when they’ve driven the last surviving people away to scatter and die, and got away with it –- if we let them get away with it — what are they going to do then, those corporate security and surveillance billionaires, those merchants of the military-industrial complex who own our politicians – what do you think they’ll do next?

Despair

Of course you despair. We’ve all despaired. We despair, we go to bed, we get up, and we can still see them coming to destroy us all. We see that even if we’re lucky enough to live out our own lives before they get us, they will get our children, or our grandchildren, through war, extreme poverty or accelerated climate crisis. So we come together, we push back, and we begin to feel alive again. There are millions of us, and our numbers grow every day. Support the pushback, speed the solution, save young lives…

  1. Absolutely amazing cry from the heart. You speak for all of us who are watching, overwhelmed, these horrors as they continue so unabated and escalate in their levels of obscenity so rapidly from one day to the next: and for all of us in all this turmoil desperately looking this way and that to see what we can do as the inferno advances steadily outwards. Thank you.

  2. Dear Kay,

This is phenomenal – it’s the most powerful thing I think I have read about this in the whole of the past couple of years. It needs to be seen by everyone – I’ll do my bit to circulate it as far and wide as I can

Thank you so much for your fearless anger and brilliant language. I realise that this could cause you plenty of grief, but we are all here to stand and defend you if necessary!

    Love and solidarity,

    • Thank you! As a veteran of several anti-corporate takeover campaigns, I know exactly what you mean but I’ve come to the conclusion that the pain of *not* doing all you can to push back is worse than the consequences of doing so.

  3. ‘Despair’ is the word; I’ve read it, and seen it on film so many times. It’s impossible to hear the crocodile tears about Ukraine, Sudan (from those who even know/care about the latter) and so on and not treat it as the hypocrisy it is: lives matter only when they have political capital. The rest are expendable. Most who read this will have been aware of this particular hypocrisy since ‘The Holocaust Industry’ and long before… But how many of us could have imagined Israel succeeding in silencing ‘the West’, with their spurious accusations, as completely as they have?

Of course one of these days all those silent people, or their successors, will lament the tragedy of what happened, when the victims are all dead, the ‘victory’ is complete and nothing remains to be fought for. Haven’t we seen it all before? The lessons of history continue, and will always continue, to fall on deaf ears.

    • Hi Andrew, on the one hand I agree with you. Over the last ten years (the time I personally have been aware of, and interested in, international socialism) I’ve been to conferences and heard cries for help and/or cries of despair for/from/about those places and others. I’ve seen different people dedicate themselves to the campaigns in various different countries, and they seem so scattered, so far behind the game that whole communities die, and despair is always hovering — but on the other hand, I’d say this time is different. Palestine is a long way from being the only horror story unfolding in the world but it’s the first one in the time I’ve been looking that has attracted attention and support from all over the world. That’s why the authorities are so scared, and coming down so hard on protest and, all over the world we see people working out that the enemy is the same one in every case – whole countries being run/attacked/destroyed/annexed for the sake of big money, specifically what they call the military/industrial complex. We have yet to see what a worldwide fightback will look like, and what it will achieve.

I suspect Ilan Pape is right when he says the Israeli colonialist state (in its current form anyway) will fall, but that it will be too late for this generation of Palestinians to benefit. That’s a heartbreak that we’ll all carry with us but it’s not quite the same as despair.
