Genocide was stalking the corridors of conference

I’m just back from day one of FiLiA, the biggest (and I’d say the best) feminist conference in Europe. No time to say much yet, but there was one very, very urgent message:

During the opening speeches, Rahila Gupta reminded everyone that what’s happening in Palestine is not something anyone can afford to ignore.

I went to the session on anti-war activism presented by Bronwyn Winter, Maryam Aldossari, Lepa Mladjenovic and Rauda Morcos.

Bronwyn reminded us at the start that in any war situation, there’s always huge pressure to ‘take sides’ between warring nations but that’s not how feminists do piece-building work, and it’s why we had Yvonne Deutch from the Women in Black with us, as well as Rauda from Palestine.

Rauda joined us by Zoom, and we asked her, in the light of the declarations of peace currently plastering our newspapers, what her message is to activists in the UK. It was this:

The world needs to put an end to the Zionist project before any “peace process” can have any meaning and that peace process, should we reach the beginning of it, needs to be led by women.

There is far, far more to be blogged concerning this year’s FiLiA, but that’s the message that can’t wait, and it’s all this blogger has time for tonight. Two more days of glorious conference to come…

One response to “Genocide was stalking the corridors of conference”

  1. Thanks so much! I’ll be thinking about this message on the march tomorrow.

It’s clearly vital to get people properly informed about Zionism now. At the Hastings Jews for Justice sukkah this evening in town, an otherwise obviously well-informed woman asked me if I could explain to her the difference between Judaism and Zionism. Apart from giving her a leaflet for the book (😊), I did my best to give a very potted explanation, for which she was very grateful. A lot of education to do…
